Curse the fig tree?

One thing that has been on my mind is the story about the fig tree (Matthew 21:18-22). Jesus comes to the tree and it does not produce fruit so He curses it. Now the Church says that this is because the tree does not produce fruit, but I think that there is more to this story. What season was the tree in? Where was the tree located (by water, sand, or gravel)? What was Jesus thinking about (mission work, healing, or John the Baptist) and doing at the time (walking, jogging, running, skipping, talking, debating)? Why would God create something with a DNA to produce during a specific time, and demand fruit when it shouldn't be producing? Is God out to create fallen beings and condemn them to hades? Does God make a way for His creation to be redeemed? So, in lieu of viewing this in seasons, should we see it as a story with a different lesson? Could our interpretation of the fig tree be incorrect? Could He be teaching us something else as He does in parables? Could we be doing this same type of interpretation throughout the rest of our doctrine? Is Jesus talking about doing things in and out of season, is He speaking about faith and walking in faith, or is He speaking about something altogether different then what our finite minds can fathom?
